Rwanda, Land of a Thousand Hills, is a small landlocked country in Africa's Great Lakes region.

Its landscapes are mostly green, but vary widely, from imposing basaltic plateaux and volcanoes of the Congo-Nile Crest to the rolling hills of the centre of the country and the plateaux and basins of the east. Interspersed among the hills are a host of small lakes and marshes.

Rwanda has a long, eventful and tragic history. Since 2000, Rwanda has regained its tranquillity and is once more a safe place to live. It has committed itself to the path of progress.

Roads, means of transport and hotel infrastructures have developed considerably. Tourism, be it of the business of leisure variety, has allowed foreigners to discover Rwanda's assets – its impressive reserves, and the beauty and diversity of national parks.

This volume sets out to capture the Rwandan territory in all its human and natural complexity, to highlight the changes that have taken place since 1994, and to enable readers to acquaint themselves not only with the country's landscape but also with its people – their history, their sufferings and their hopes for the future.
